Food for kids media- The role of advertising in kids health!

Kids have become one of the most important customer segments that are being given a lot of importance by companies. Wherever these children go, their senses are being bombarded by interesting and funny advertisements. Every where, they can see something or the other being marketed. Since this is a very impressionable age, they get caught in the frenzy of information overloading done in these marketing campaigns and fell under its spell. Advertisements can be seen on TV, listened on radio and seen on Internet. Moreover, even when going to the schools, they can see advertisements everywhere, on buses, hoardings, even magazines. It has been estimated that advertisements targeting children will exceed $ 15 billion annually. Food advertisements are frequently seen focus on breakfast cereals, fast food, candies, lollies, snacks and many food items. Nowhere in these advertisements, is calories intake per grams or nutritional value of these food items mentioned. Many of the food items are high in salt, sugar, fat and all in all they are inadequate from nutrition point of view.

Marketing agencies are trying to establish loyalty about brands right from the childhood. Slowly and gradually, the brand loyalty gets instilled among kids. Marketers also make use of popular characters like Blues Clues, Dora the Explorer, and many other characters that have quite an impact on the young impressionable minds of young kids. Whichever food has been marketed using a popular character, kids seem to hawk on those food items. Products meant for adults are also sold in the market by using the guise of cartoon characters like Barbie XXX or Play Doh. These are actually junk foods offered to the kids in disguised advertisements. Kids being kids get enthralled by these flashy advertisements and they want to buy them at any cost. Parents with little time and patience willingly give in to the tantrums of the kids and thus such junk foods find place in several households. Studies conducted in this area offer alarming statistics wherein it was found that kids gorging on these food items became unusually obese and developed a wide range of ailments.

Kids today are trapped with marketing everywhere they go

How to convince children to have healthy and nutritious diet is matter of discussion among the parents. Keeping up with what child needs, what they do not need, and what they are actually eating can be difficult. There are various apps and media are available to help the children as well as parents. Yum Yum Kids is a New Zealand owned website that was started in the autumn of 2008 by Saraid Black and Monique Rosie. They have compiled a range of articles to provide relevant and practical information that will find genuinely useful for the purpose. The recipe section that is new for Yum Yum kids are very helpful to learn different recipes everyday.
Obesity in childhood places children and youth at risk for becoming obese as adults and associated poor health such as diabetes, cardiovascular disease, and some forms of cancer . Most of the food advertisements are for fast foods, breakfast cereals, snacks and candies that are high in sugar, salt and fat and nutritionally inadequate. The study found that parents and guardians need better nutrition guidance to help young children develop healthy eating habits from 12 months upwards. Food for kids media gives children and families the knowledge and skill they need to make healthy choice for diet and calculates the appropriate dietary needs for children based on factors, such as the child’s date of birth, weight, height, gender and activity levels.
